the answer to the original question is:
yes there are seveal drivers that are just source and several
that, while a mixture of source and prioprietary code, are well supported.

The cards based on the Prism chipsets are well supported.
(I use an old lucent 'wi' card).
the Atheros company has supoprted a good set of drivers for their chips 
but they
provide a non source component as well.

(They need to do this to be allowed to sell the cards as the hardware is 
capable of
transmitting outside the legal range and if they allow direct access to 
the cards they
could be fined for producing illegal equipment.)

There are now also drivers for the new intel chips.

The "NDIS" wrappers also allow you to run most cards that have NDIS 5.1  
drivers
as well.
