Nem egészen.
Legjobb tudomásom szerint azért fejlesztenek saját formátumot, mert nem 
akarnak jogdíjjat fizetni.


"On April 14, 2000, DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation was born.  It's 
birth was a mutual effort of the ten companies that originated DVD Format 
back in 1995.  They also were the founding fathers of DVD Forum.  

These companies are:  Hitachi, Philips, Matsushita, Mitsubishi, JVC, 
Pioneer, Sony, Thomson, Time Warner and Toshiba.

Even before the Company was established, manufacturers were producing DVD 
products, and they needed to use the Format and the Logo.  So Toshiba 
acted as an Interim Licensor, authorizing the use of Format/Logo       
from July 1999 until the establishment of DVD FLLC.  (Previous to July 
1999, there was the Interim License, but that became invalid when the DVD 
FORMAT/LOGO LICENSE came into effect in July 1999)."
